2016 VMAs Recap

vma-tgj-600x337

The MTV Video Music Awards are an annual “holiday” of sorts for me. For the past few years, awards shows in general have been very lackluster with a few sporadic great moments. The VMAs really put in a great effort to make this year’s show one of the best.

What I Saw…

A-List lineup… FINALLY!

For the last few years, the MTV Video Music Awards have been very mediocre. But for this year’s VMAs, MTV made sure they had an all-star lineup. Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Kanye West, etc. Unlike the 2016 Grammy Awards & Billboard Awards earlier this year, the VMA producers definitely didn’t drop the ball this time when it comes to star power.

Rihanna/Video Vanguard

I’m one of the many people who felt like MTV had no business giving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award to Rihanna in the first place. They’ve gone years without handing out the award before (presumably due to no one being deserving at the time), so I don’t see why they couldn’t just omit the award from this year’s show. Or give it to Beyoncé again (she definitely deserved it). Rihanna is receiving the award prematurely, and her videos really aren’t good/iconic enough for her name to be mentioned in the same sentence as Michael Jackson (let alone receive an award named after him). Other recipients have made sense: Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Hype Williams, Beastie Boys, etc. But this year, it felt like MTV just wanted to make sure Rihanna performed at the show so they had to give her something.

Speaking of Rihanna’s performance…

She had four four-minute performances unlike Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake, who performed ONCE for 16 minutes. That in itself made me roll my eyes but Continue reading

2 Things I Learned from Beyoncé During the Formation World Tour

rob_raleigh_1

Two weeks ago, I had the great pleasure of being able to witness Beyoncé in concert for a second time. When Bey first announced this tour, I made sure I got my tickets this time because I missed On The Run in 2014. I made a vow to myself back then that I would never miss another Beyoncé tour for as long as I live. The Formation World Tour was not the first time I’ve seen Beyoncé live. The first Beyoncé concert I went to was the Mrs. Carter Show World Tour back in 2013. This was prior to the self-titled visual album being released and since I missed On The Run, there were quite a few songs that I hadn’t been able to see her perform live. So I would’ve been perfectly fine with Beyoncé touring without putting out a new album. But luckily Queen Bey decided to bless the BeyHive with another album in April, just days before her tour’s opening show. Every Beyoncé concert is an amazing experience but I walked out of the stadium two weeks ago feeling like I actually learned two major things from Mrs. Knowles-Carter.

Ranking Beyoncé’s Six Studio Albums

It’s Beyoncé eve for me and my fiancé! Tomorrow night we will be in a stadium watching Beyoncé perform hits from her extensive catalog of music. In light of that, I wanted to take some time and rank Beyoncé’s solo albums from best to “worst”. Keep in mind that I actually love all of these albums but when you take Beyoncé’s growth as an artist into consideration, some albums are going to be better than others.

Lemonade

Lemonade is Beyoncé’s most cohesive album/project to date. This time she took the visual album to a whole ‘nother level by making it into a complete film. Instead of giving us a bunch of random visuals, she gave us a story with Lemonade (the album and the movie). I really don’t even listen to this album on shuffle because I prefer to take the journey of the story each time I listen. Shuffling through the songs doesn’t really allow you to do that. I love that Beyoncé didn’t sugarcoat anything with the lyrics on this album or with the film. She’s unapologetically Black and unapologetically a scorned woman. Everything she sings is exactly what a woman in that position would say. The sadness, the anger, the love, etc. Those are all very real emotions and the way she’s talking on this album is truly authentic to the feelings that she’s trying to convey. I really appreciate the fact that Beyoncé kept it all the way real on this record.

Highlights: “All Night”, “Love Drought”, “Sorry”

Cravings by Chrissy Teigen

One of my birthday gifts this year was Cravings by Chrissy Teigen. My mom bought it for me because she knows that I’ve been learning the ropes in the kitchen via Pinterest. I’ve never had a cookbook before so this is my very first one. And I’m also a big fan of Chrissy Teigen. I’m super duper excited to try these recipes, many of which I have never even thought about making before. Although I love my recipes board on Pinterest, having an actual book with pages and pictures that I can look at is going to be awesome. I won’t have to scroll and screenshot images on my phone or worry about my touching my phone with food on my fingers. Eventually I’ll make my own cookbook binder with all of my favorite Pinterest recipes but I haven’t had the time to invest in that right now. Unfortunately, I’m not going to be able to post a link to the recipes like I usually do because that could get me in trouble but I can post a link to purchase the book. If you like Chrissy Teigen’s personality and sense of humor and you also like to cook, I would suggest buying this for yourself. Her write-ups are funny and hopefully the recipes are delicious too. I guess I’ll find out soon enough…

The Worst Grammy Awards Show Ever!

This years Grammy awards show was the WORST Grammy awards show I have ever seen. I’ve been watching the Grammys for as long as I can remember. It was and still is a very big event in my household. We watch the red carpet and the ceremony one night. And the next night we watch Fashion Police as a recap. When I was really young, I used to just watch the red carpet with my mom and then go to bed. After Monday’s show, I might just go back to doing that.

The show aired on a Monday.

The Grammys like most other award shows that air on ABC, NBC & CBS, always air on Sundays. But not this year. Continue reading

Let’s Get In Formation!

I’m going to see Beyoncé!

On Monday February 15th, I was sitting at home instead of at work because it snowed in my city. At 10:00am that morning, I was frantically refreshing the Ticketmaster app that I have on my phone. By the way, I don’t have a computer at my apartment yet. That’s why I was using the app instead of the website. I’ll have my Macbook Pro very soon though. Anyway, I was using the BeyHive presale code that I received in my email from Beyoncé’s official website last week. But my app kept saying that there were no tickets available. Now, I know that Beyoncé can sell out a stadium in 10-20 minutes BUT it was 10:01. There was no way all the tickets were gone in one minute. So I opened my Twitter app to see if anyone was in Ticketmaster’s mentions complaining about an issue. And of course… hundreds of people were saying that the BeyHive presale code was not working. A few minutes later, I saw that someone that I follow on Twitter was able to get tickets to another show that had gone on sale that same day. So I knew that there had to be a way for me to get my tickets. I checked Ticketmaster’s mentions again and I saw someone say that they had heard the new BeyHive presale code was… “Beyonce” (without the accent mark). So I tried that… AND IT WORKED.

When I wasn’t able to go to the On The Run tour with Beyoncé and Jay Z, I was crushed. And I vowed to myself (and my parents and my then-boyfriend/now-fiance) that I would never miss a Beyoncé tour again. So I started a Beyoncé emergency fund and I actually didn’t have to use it this time around but if I ever need to, I’ve got my coins ready.

Hey Beyoncé girl, see you on May 3rd!

PS. I got FLOOR SEATS! 🙂

9/4/81: Bey Day

Today is Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter’s 33rd birthday so I would like to take some time to thank God for creating her and blessing her with so much talent. I would like to thank her mother, Tina, for teaching her “good home-training”. I would like to thank her father, Mathew, for teaching her “how to love her haters” and for making her run and sing at the same time during Destiny’s Child bootcamp. I would like to thank her sister, Solange, for teaching her “to speak her mind”. I would like to thank her husband, Jay Z, for “making her feel so goddamn fine”. I would also like to thank her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, for increasing the happiness and the drive that Beyoncé previously had and for sharing her mother with the rest of us fans.

And last but certainly not least, I would like to thank Beyoncé for being a vessel of strength and a ray of light in a world that can be so dark for so many of her fans. Thank you, Beyoncé, for singing the words that I am sometimes afraid to say. Thank you for going above and beyond to give your fans the best albums, visuals and stage shows that you can. Thank you for remaining a good person even though you have been blessed with so much success. Thank you for all that are and all that you do. I am so proud to be a member of the BeyHive. I hope God continues to bless you with many more years of success and happiness so that you can continue to bless us with many more albums and tours.
