This years Grammy awards show was the WORST Grammy awards show I have ever seen. I’ve been watching the Grammys for as long as I can remember. It was and still is a very big event in my household. We watch the red carpet and the ceremony one night. And the next night we watch Fashion Police as a recap. When I was really young, I used to just watch the red carpet with my mom and then go to bed. After Monday’s show, I might just go back to doing that.
The show aired on a Monday.
The Grammys like most other award shows that air on ABC, NBC & CBS, always air on Sundays. But not this year. Apparently the producers did not want to risk low ratings due to Valentine’s Day falling on a Sunday this year (which I’m sure it has done at least a few times in the past anyway). Well guess what, producers? You still had low ratings because no one expected the Grammys to be on a Monday night. And even when Monday arrived, it just didn’t feel like a Grammy day. There wasn’t much media coverage about the show or pre-Grammy events. And my next point may be why there was limited coverage.
There were barely any real stars at the Grammys this year.
Beyoncé ended up showing up to present the last award but even that was super iffy. She didn’t sit in the audience, she didn’t walk the red carpet and her fans were uncertain if she’d even make an appearance. And Beyoncé was arguably the biggest star there that night. Rihanna didn’t show up or perform (more about that later). Honestly just the fact that Rihanna wasn’t there and Beyoncé didn’t want anyone to know she was there is really enough to show that the Grammys were lacking star power this year. Those two ladies are two of the most anticipated red carpet arrivals. Jay Z, Drake, Kanye, Nicki Minaj and many more big names opted not to attend this year for whatever reason. And three out of those four names were even nominated and still didn’t show.
This year’s performers were just underwhelming.
Even Adele didn’t move me this time around. Rihanna and Nicki Minaj were originally scheduled to perform but they both pulled out. Lauryn Hill was to perform with The Weeknd but for one reason or another, she didn’t take the stage. The only really good performance Monday night was Kendrick Lamar. Demi Lovato’s participation in the Lionel Richie tribute “melody” (her words, not mine) was nice too.
The awards were given to the wrong people.
Tori Kelly and Jazmine Sullivan were robbed. I don’t understand how Meghan Trainor won Best New Artist when 1) she was nominated for a Grammy last year so she’s not “new”, and 2) she wasn’t the BEST in the category. I should be used to this kind of disappointment by now considering the way Beyoncé was robbed of Album of the Year last year and Kendrick was robbed of his rap awards a few years when Macklemore won everything. The Grammys may not have a diversity problem like the Oscars, however they damn sure have a problem with giving the awards to the wrong people.
